Does an automatic pool cover work with a perimeter overflow pool?

Yes, an automatic pool cover can work with a perimeter overflow pool, but the same conditions that enable the use of an auto cover apply, along with some additional ones.

Any pool that will incorporate an automatic pool cover must have a rectangular track system. So, in a traditional pool, it does not have to be rectangular, but the way the pool cover tracks are installed must be rectangular. For a perimeter overflow pool with an auto cover, the pool must be rectangular, and the pool cover track must be installed parallel to the rectangular pool walls. No one makes a track system that can be installed along a free-form pool to support an automatic pool cover.

A traditional pool with a pool cover can’t be installed over a multi-level pool deck unless it is planned and incorporated before the deck is installed. Perimeter overflow pools could also accommodate a multi-level pool deck, theoretically, if parts of the pool cover system are installed beforehand. Even though it is possible, in most scenarios, it would likely defeat the purpose of a perimeter overflow pool design.

A perimeter overflow pool is essentially a four-sided vanishing-edge pool with specific modifications. The builder must follow vanishing-edge principles, including ensuring the top of the vanishing-edge wall is the same basic height on all four sides, providing a smooth top edge to avoid cutting the pool cover vinyl, and ensuring there is a way to catch the water that overflows the edge of the pool walls.

Installation of the coping is even more critical than usual. Perimeter overflow pool coping must be installed with a gap between the edge of the pool wall and the coping, and it must be parallel to the pool wall. If the coping is not parallel with the pool wall, it could catch on the pool cover hardware. Special pool cover hardware must be custom-made to attach the lead edge bar of the pool cover to the track system that is hidden beneath the coping.

Another essential detail relates to the bottom of the coping. The coping installer must verify that the materials used to attach the coping do not cover any part of the track system. The bottom of the coping should also be free of burs or sharp edges that could cut the pool cover vinyl.

Perimeter overflow pools must have a trough system around the entire pool to collect water from the pool and return it to the pool. One big mistake that inexperienced builders make is using the pool cover box as part of the trough system. It should be separated because yard debris falls onto the pool cover and gets pulled into the cover box when the cover is opened, interfering with and even clogging the trough system.

Other modifications must also be made to incorporate an automatic pool cover with a perimeter overflow pool. The pools are beautiful. They also require a significantly larger investment, but they are stunningly beautiful. Few homeowners will consider the perimeter overflow pool the best option for them, but those who do will not be disappointed. They are unique and visually appealing.
